Green is the hot color for interior design this season. The weather and blooming of flowers makes us think of bright and lively colors so green is an obvious choice. Other colors that would be great to bring into your home to brighten it up would be light blue and yellow.
If you don’t want to paint your walls or change your furniture around adding accents to your home is the perfect way to add color and energy into a room. A good start is to add a coffee table or side table in a vibrant green hue to really spice up a room. You could even take an old one from your attic and paint it to give it a innovative new upgrade. Grab a few new throw pillows in a bright color to make your living space feel more fresh. Even just finding a new vase and adding some fresh flowers is the perfect way to welcome in the warm weather. Happy Spring!
Spring is Here!
Spring is finally here! The flowers are going to start to bloom and the temperatures are starting to rise. Spring is the best time to go for a picnic and a hike or sit on the rooftop of your favorite DC restaurant but it is also the best time to do a little Spring Cleaning to brighten up your home!
Washing your windows and mopping your floors are definitely important but another great thing to do this spring is clean out your closets! If there is something in there that you haven’t worn in a year get rid of it! Out with the old and in with the new! Make sure to donate your gently worn clothes to some of the great organizations in the District who give back to our community. We suggest Martha’s Table and Dress for Success as great organizations to donate to!

Navy Yard Buzz
Where’s the best place to live in DC? DC is constantly changing and there are so many great neighborhoods to live in but the Navy Yard is one of the newest development projects in DC. The next big addition to the buzzing area around Nationals Park is the Dock 79 development, located between the ballpark and the Anacostia River.
Dock 79 boasts great restaurants and an innovative new way to live urban. The apartment complex hosts rooftop yoga for residents along with green buildings, smart technologies and an easy commute into the middle of the city.
Today Dock 79 has multiple restaurants planned to open in 2017: Salt Line, a New England inspired seafood restaurant from chef Kyle Bailey and the team behind Sixth Engine and Town Hall, and a second location of All-Purpose, the critically acclaimed Shaw pizzeria. They’ll be joined by Bardo, which plans to open a beer garden and dog park before baseball season commences. These along with the current restaurants already near Dock 79 in Yards Park like Osteria Morini and Due South make the Navy Yard one of the up and coming neighborhoods in DC.

In this Winter
What’s more exciting than redecorating your home to match the season? Here are our top picks for this winter’s trends! Use them as inspiration, as a guide, and get creative with home décor this winter!
Winter Greys
This winter is all about those grey shades. Bring in those gloomy mornings and grey skies into your home by incorporating hues of greys. Embrace the cooler air and the grey mornings because this season’s trend is synonymous to the weather.
Roaring 20s
Crystals and silvery things are on our palette this winter. No need to redecorate the whole house entirely, but pick out some items that reflect the 20s. A decorative mirror, velvet coverings, and pearly white knick-knacks should do just the thing!
Statement Shine
Mixed textures has been the trend talk of this year! Doesn’t matter if your chair is made of rattan, wood, or even velvet, it has to shine like no other furniture in your room! Put it by the window with a side table for that perfect snowy morning gaze.
Candles with Characters
No, we’re not talking about candle holders, we’re talking about candles! So many festive candles are out this weekend and let that be the center of attention in the room. Bring out the colors, cute carvings, and metallic candles for a chic look!
All things Handmade
Traveling to cool places? Bring back some handmade goodies! These range from plates to woven table clothes. This year, we’re loving all-things handmade! Doesn’t have to come from halfway across the world, local DC shops are great places to shop for unique handmade pieces for your home.
Survival Tips for Holiday Travel
Now that the Holiday season is right around the corner, plans that involve traveling is ringing in. Wherever you’re heading, if you’re traveling during the holiday season, realize that everyone else in the world is, too. Here are some tips to survive the holiday travel season!
1. Research
Make back-up plans if traffic makes your way too overwhelming. Break up a long drive by finding a few places to stop. When flying, make sure you check the airline’s restrictions on carry-on luggage and fees for checked bags.
2. Stay connected
Download the latest travel apps before you leave home. Flight Status gives you real-time updates on delays, baggage numbers, and more. GateGuru gives you approximate times you’ll spend in security. Driving up all night? Find the cheapest gas and cleanest bathrooms on the road with GasBuddy and SitorSquat.
3. Don’t get hangry
When your tummy growls, your mind can’t think straight. Pack snacks and drinks, so that you and your family will be fueled up for a road trip. If you’re flying, get something to eat before you board the plane so you won’t have to rely on airline food.
4. Ship gifts or give gift cards
TSA suggests to ship wrapped gifts or wait until you reach your destination to wrap them, as they might have to unwrap a present to inspect it.
5. Travel on off-peak days
“Flight statistics show that planes traveling earlier in the day have a better on-time performance. Best time to hit the road? When everyone else is asleep – Early morning or late at night.”
6. Plan for the unexpected
Traveling during snow season? Think ahead. Leave extra time before flights to deal with security, extra time between connection and, for road trips, pack tire chains for snowy conditions!
Winterizing Your Home
Don’t forget to quick fix your home and transition for the colder days. Make sure your home is ready and safe for your family. Get it on with our checklist!
1. Check Batteries
This is a simple yet often overlooked step. Checking the batteries in your various alarms and safety devices will make sure everyone stays safe this winter, no matter what accidents or storms occur. Make sure flashlights are ready to go in case of power outages. In addition, stocking up on extra batteries is always a good idea!
2. Clean Out Gutters
Be sure to clean your gutters before winter hits to prevent costly repairs and damage on your home. Cleaner rain gutters will help with melting ice and excess rain to flow properly, preventing flooding and other home damages.
3. Cover Cracks & Leaks
To make sure you heat your home efficiently, seal any cracks that can possible let cold air in. Add weather stripping or caulking to remove unwanted air leaks and drafts, and most importantly, to keep those heating bills low!
4. Trim Branches
Ensure your yard stays strong and healthy until the spring by trimming your branches. Winter storms can weigh down trees with ice and snow, and wind only adds to your problems.
5. Reverse Ceiling Fans
To best circulate heat around your home, reverse your ceiling fans from their summer direction. This is a great way to give your family extra warmth without adding to the heating bill.
6. Clean Chimneys
One the best parts of cold weather is curling up by the fire. Schedule a professional chimney cleaning early in the season to make sure you are ready before extra-low temps hit. Be sure to also check the exterior of your chimney for loose materials or debris.
7. Add Insulation
Keep the heat in and the cold out by adding insulation to your home. This will cut your energy bill while also giving you extra warmth. Some of our favorite quick fixes include adding a chic thick curtain or fuzzy floor rugs to trap heat in your home.
DIY Pumpkin Vase Centerpiece
Try these easy steps to create a fall centerpiece that will spice up your space for the season!
You’ll need:
- A pumpkin
- Knife
- Tin can
- Bleach
- Fillings of your choice
Instructions:
1. Find a pumpkin of your choice and cut a hole in the top. Cut it straight down so you create a hole in the pumpkin.
2. Scoop out the seeds and strings until the hole is clean.
3. Add bleach inside the pumpkin and swirl it around.
4. Pour out the bleach and allow it to dry.
5. Take a tin can, such as leftover from canned beans or chicken noodle soup, and insert it into the hole.
6. From here, you can put in fillings of your choice! Some of our favorites include:
a. Filling the tin can with water and turn it into a vase for fresh flowers
b. Find twigs, wheat, dried leaves, and pinecones to make it a natural centerpiece
c. Turn it into a candle holder! There are two ways to do this: use a big candle that fits in the can perfectly, or fill the can with dried beans or small rocks and insert a tall, tapered candle. The beans and rocks will hold it in place
d. Fill the can with dried flowers and your favorite potpourri for an extra scent
e. Fill the can with soil and add succulents to make a fall succulent garden
H Street Corridor
What’s going on along H Street? New developments and restaurants opening? H Street might just be the new up and coming neighborhood in DC!
The H Street neighborhood was one of Washington’s earliest and busiest commercial districts. That quickly went into decline after World War II and businesses in the corridor were severely damaged during the 1968 riots. It’s recovery only started in the 21st century.
H Street soon became an Arts and Entertainment District in the mid-2000s with dance studios, performance spaces, local boutiques, and art galleries.
2016, however, is a new era for H Street Corridor. 14 residential buildings are currently being developed with a total of 1,458 units. With new restaurants, entertainment, and grocery shops opening in early 2017, H Street Corridor will soon be a neighborhood of choice for settling down!
Residential buildings are likely to open between 2017 and 2018 with leasing options available starting this year. This neighborhood will surely be packed and completed by 2018.
Get ready for this new neighborhood coming to the District!

From Runway to Home: How to Use Fall’s Top Runway Trends to Decorate Your Home
From New York to Milan, everyone’s been buzzing about Fall Fashion Week around the world. Once again, the fashion world captured sensational trends for upcoming seasons. Often fashion trends influence home trends, and that’s certainly true for fall 2016.
1. Vintage and Victorian
Designers like Lanvin, Loewe, and Balmain wowed the stage with a Victorian and vintage look. This trend is elegant and perfect to tie in classical pieces into your home. Search through yard sales or flea markets for small vintage kitchen items, décor, and home pieces for a chic, yet affordable look.
2. Chunky Knits
Chunky knits and tweeds were all over fashion week runways including Jil Sander and Etro. These opened up to all sorts of upholstery and soft accessories for the home. Adding a soft knit pillow and throw on your couch can set your mood in right for the cooler weather.
3. Faux Fur
This season’s furs include pieces from Salvatore Ferragamo, Derek Lam, Fendi, and Oscar de la Renta. Throwing faux fur on your sofa or dining chairs gives the room a cozier feel for fall cover ups.
4. Mad for Plaid
Synonymous to fall and was spotted all over the runways, plaid is making a big comeback this autumn. Marc Jacobs, Moncler Gamme Rouge, and Alexander Way all threw in plaid pieces in their collection and you can do the same to your home. Plaid gives a lift to solids and provides contrast and character everywhere.
5. Feeling Fringy
Fringes, trims and tassels were all about this year’s fashion week. Burberry, Rebecca Minkoff, and BCBG Max Azria used these trends on their collection and you can definitely incorporate them into your homes. Fringed lamp shades, trimmed shams, and tassels on your throws and you’re good to go.
6. Suede Parade
Like Anna Sui, Zimmermann, and Derek Lam, suede is the way to go. Join the trend by adding suede pieces to your home! Its touchable surface makes the fabric a winner for furniture and home accessories. Some items include blankets, pillow covers, and even suede photo frames.
7. A touch of Velvet
Velvet’s cozy quality makes it ideal for the fall weather, while its rich look instantly creates luxury in any room. Gucci and Chanel have designed dresses, jumpsuits, and even shoes that are made of velvet and now home accessories come in velvet fabric too. No need to go all out, simply changing up your fabric would create an instant change.
8. A bit of Glitter & Gold
From Opening Ceremony’s glittered face to Alexander McQueen’s sheer sparkly veil, gold, glitter, and sequins rocked the runway. Gold-hued accessories and pieces are also a leading trend in interior design, showcased in lighting, furniture, and hardware.
9. Extra long Everything
Cover your sofas and beds with extra long blankets. Just like the runway, capelets and extra long sleeves gives a functional purpose on keeping you warm. Designers like Christian Dior and Brandon Maxwell strolled the stage with sleeves that are way longer than your arms and this definitely give out those cold autumn vibes.
10. Metal Details
Alexander Wang and Michael Kors gave metal details in their look with accessories and details on their pieces. Adding metal décor into your home cools the space as you prepare for warm tones to emerge this fall.
Arlington’s New Townhouse Community
Arlington welcomes Carver Place, a unique community of townhouses just west of Washington, DC on South Rolfe Street. Carver Place has sold 24 beautiful homes, making a tremendous statement. Craftmark Homes settled in on the perfect location with the metropolitan area just outside the door with a great selection of shopping and restaurants. Just a couple miles north and east, residents will find destinations like Crystal City, Virginia Highlands Park, and the Arlington National Cemetery. Crossing the nearby Potomac River gives residents the chance to enjoy DC’s cultural attractions. Carver Place is also within close proximity to Pentagon City and Clarendon Metro stations.
These homes come in 3 to 4 bedrooms with 2 to 3 baths and 1 or 2-car garages. Other exciting features include rooftop terraces and huge walk-in closets. Carver Place especially highlights its interior architecture with open living spaces, energy efficient designs, and contemporary lighting. Whether it’s staying at home or traveling for a casual outing, this neighborhood offers something new to enjoy in every direction.
Falling in Love with Seasonal Decor
It seems like everyone is champing at the bit for the cooler days of fall, but we’re most excited for the beautiful decor options the season brings. Here are our picks for the easiest ways to bring fall into your DC home this year.
Plaids
While we often remember to wear plaid shirts on crisp days, many of us forget to also decorate with it! Look for plaids rich with reds, oranges, and yellows to keep from looking too wintry. This print makes for beautiful table runners, hand towels, napkins, and more. Feeling crafty? Repurpose an old plaid flannel into a charming fall throw pillow. We’re feeling warm and fuzzy already.
Produce
No need to limit yourself to dried leaves and pinecones this year. Hit your local grocery store for a variety of fruits and vegetables in a vivid array of seasonal colors. Depending on the sizes, these can make for beautiful layered jars, decorative filled bowls, or candle arrangements. Our favorite combination: a jar filled with fresh cranberries, kumquats, and cinnamon sticks, complete with a tea light on top.
Antlers
Shed antlers are an easy way to add rustic charm to any room this fall. If the natural look isn’t meshing with your urban chic aesthetic, try painting them (or just the tips) white, gold, or black. Pairing these with an assortment of candles is an easy and seasonally chic centerpiece for any occasion.
What’s your favorite way to add fall flair around the house? Tell us below!
Anacostia
One of the District’s best up-and-coming neighborhoods, Anacostia is enjoying hefty economic investment and sustained growth. Keep your eyes on this neighborhood as it shoots to the top of DC trendy living spots. Three new developments are coming into the area: Barry Farm, Anacostia Gateway, and Reunion Square, opening up the Anacostia Metro Station for more ridership as well as invigorating the downtown with shops and street life. Residential plans for St. Elizabeth’s East, Maple View Flats, and Poplar Point are all coming-along nicely, too.
The neighborhood where Frederick Douglass lived has much to offer from historical and cultural perspectives. Uniontown Bar & Grille is a delicious sit-down option on the main strip. Recent additions include a juice bar and arts center. Anacostia is easily accessible to the rest of DC through public transportation and driving. Visit this rising neighborhood for beautiful views of the Anacostia river, after which it was named, and to enjoy the welcoming, small-town feel.
